Birdland

Today that woodpecker I bark at was back. He was pecking at the metal top of the fireplace chimney and the sound travels all through the house. I don't like that. No, not at all. I barked at him but I can't get at him up there and he knows it. I hate him. But I can get at the wild turkeys that sometimes come through our fields. I went at one today; I think he was a tom (that's a "boy" turkey) because he was all alone. Girl turkeys mostly come in groups. Anyway, he ran into the woods as soon as he heard me barking. I usually bark as soon as I see something (or hear something... or think I see something... or think I hear something... whatever.). Holly says if I wouldn't bark I could sneek up alot closer but I like to bark at stuff. Plus, since most of the stuff I bark at runs away as soon as they hear me I don't have to run that far to chase stuff off. Why exert that much energy running when you can just bark?

got sheep?

or deer?

It seems like we've been gone a long time. I've been so tired of traveling and staying at Miss Ivy's house in the city that I haven't written anything for a while. We've been home since late saturday but while we were gone deer have been pooping in our yard and our fields. Their tracks are all over the place! They've gotten really cheeky without dogs to teach them their place. And on top of all that they're pooping right where I like to poop! Well, that stops right now. Holly and I chased a couple out from behind the studio on Tuesday. Our male human called us off and since we know it makes him happy when we obey we paid attention and came right back. We ran right up to him, did our professional "sit" and he gave us cookies and told us we were good dogs. We really got him trained good.
Today we chased some deer out of the woods behind our house. I barked at them and they ran right away. Holly wanted to chase them further but she got distracted by some furry animal that hid in a brush pile. We tried but we couldn't convince him to come out.

glee club

I might not be able to spell but I can sing! Holly and I both sing. We're staying with our friend Miss Ivy again while our people are out of town. We don't like it when our people leave us and sometimes we howl because of that. I always sit carefully, put my nose up and howl until I feel better. This time, when our people were just going out the door I started howling and Holly started howling and then Miss Ivy started howling. Then the the two dogs in the house next door started howling with us! And other dogs too, we didn't know where they were. We almost got the whole neighborhood howling along with us! That helped, not having to howl alone. It's nice to have friends. Maybe next time we can howl about something fun, like the full moon or something.

swimming in creeks

We just came back from the big dog park (Grindstone Nature Area) where dogs get to run really far without leashes! Now, we get to run really far without leashes on our own land but there aren't other dogs on our land and running with and sniffing other dogs is very important. We like being in groups of dogs. We saw a lot of dogs, met four of them close up and went swimming with two! We met a nice big black Lab and some smaller black mixed dog and after we sniffed each other we all went swimming in this big creek.

I know I'm half Australian Shepard but the other half must be some sort of water dog because I really like to go swimming. Holly even went in the creek and she usually doesn't swim as much as me. She said she went in just because she got hot but I saw how she was following that big Labrador boy around. I'm not sure a Labrador is smart enough to understand why she might follow him around. Is there room in their big lunky heads for thoughts other than "fetch", "get the ball" and "get the stick" ? I don't think so. Can a Labrador organize a herd of sheep, sort them in aphabetical order and make them adhere to a strict schedule? I don't think so. I can or at least I know I could, if my people would just get me some sheep. Oh well.

Don't get me wrong. I like Labs. I know some really nice Labs. But I don't go all dreamy eyed and flirty over them like some dogs I know.

(Maybe if some dogs spent less of their time herding bowls of ice cream they would have girl dogs following them around too.
Sheep, yeah sure. The last thing I saw you giving that herding dog "eye" to was a slice of angel food cake.

when I run...

Sometimes when I run my butt goes faster than my front.
